So last year, name the 3 most and least impressive shows.
BEST 1. The Word - I hadn't listened to their stuff before bonnaroo, but I knew I liked everyone involved, and they lived up to expectations. I believe they recieved a Jammy nomination for that show.
2. Keller Williams - I love KW and always will, seen him a few times and this was his best set ever. Freaker, Shinjuku, and Tribe?!? Not to mention Rainy Day (in the awful rain), sick versions of Brick in the Wall, Gin and Juice, and New Drug. Encore with Bid You Good?!? Amazing, not to mention that version of Bob Rules with Long Day spliced in, that will stick with me forever.
3. Dave Matthews Band - I was really undecided about Dave going in last year. I was a Dave fan when I was yonger, but dropped the taste for him when he went solo and all that nonsense. Regardless, that man impressed me. The show rocked, he rambled about port-a-potties, played a number of his best songs and included a fun cover of Time of the Season. What sealed the deal for me was him bringing our Robert Randolph for All Along the Watchtower. Blew me away. (Note: I've downloaded most of the set from last year on soulseek, but I can't find any of the songs for which Randolph is on stage. Anyone help me?)
WORST 1. Trey - sorry, like a said on another thread. You noodled around and mumbled intermittently. The highlight of the show (which I didnt see all of, to be fair) was all the glowsticks.
2. Modest Mouse - Boo! I didn't think there was a lot of energy on stage; maybe for a couple of songs there was. They played Float On second, kind of like they just wanted it out of the way. Not to mention that their sound didn't come across too well, probably because so much of their noise gets cleaned-up in studio.
3. The Toots and the Maytals - First of all, there was barely anyone at this show, which occured on the main stage early sunday. I thought a ton of people would be there, but they wern't. Toots came on a little late, despite being the first act of the day. They played basically all of the songs I wanted to hear, and the sound was prety good, but the energy was not there. I know they're all getting old, but I want lots of energy, crowd movement, and noise at a reggae show. I enjoyed the set, but not to the point I thought I would, perhaps I was biased due to my high expectations.
Waddya think? Agree? Disagree? What's your list?

Best: 1) Duo w/ Mike (UNBELIEVABLE.) 2) Mouse on Mars (WORST set time ever - 3pm?? Still killed it) 3) KDTU (Payback. 'Nuff Said) Honorable Mention - Super Jam (Pino Palladino + ?love = ridiculous) Worse: 1) Particle (weak sauce. need to lay off the yayo & ego cocktails.) 2) Modest Mouse (weak in general) 3) Panic (not a fan, so I'm biased)

70VP was too new to be playing live at all at that point -- which Trey has freely admitted in interviews since then. Bass player wasn't working out, chemistry wasn't there yet. Add to that some bad sound issues and Bo Bice and you've got a recipe for disaster.
BUT when he said that Bo Bice was going to play, I laughed harder than I did during all of Charlie Murphy's set put together.
True, in fairness the band wasn't yet fully formed. However, these guys are "jam" artists, aren't they? Shouldn't they be able to pick up an play? And it wasn't like the timing was totally off or the sound wasn't that good. There was a total lack of energy on that stage. And what business does Trey have taking a stage with a band that "wasn't ready"? That was the only late nite stage show, and it saddened me.
I agree on KDTU, that was some unreal jamming. Not to mention the sheer length of the set.
sounds like a recipe for disaster. i agree with you clutch..they should be able to pick up and play...but if the chemisty isn't there sometimes it's just a lost cause. hopefully things are different this year and Trey gives us some crazy stuff during Phil and Friends.
Wow Clutch! You and me usually agree on things, but I don't think we were at the same Toots and the Maytals show. Either that or he was directing all of his good energy towards me. My list is like this. Best 1. Toots and the Maytals 2. Xavier Rudd 3. Allman Brothers Worst 1. SuperJam- I guess I just wasn't feeling it. 2.STS9- I hate these guys, yet I always end up seeing them

As far as my pick on Super Jam SaintCash -- seeing Herbie laugh out loud at the sheer joy of Pino & ?love playing with the rhythm so losely (the hesitation thing) lit me up totally. Seeing a legend really feel what he's doing and make it totally fresh after all those years is awesome.
Best: 1. Herbie Hancock/?uestlove superjam. IF you missed it, you missed the fuck out. 45 minute Improv section to open the show. 2. DJ Krush. Opened the Vortex. 3. Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters. Funkiest Frankenstein ever. honorable mention: Peter Rowan and Crucial Reggae. simply Amazing Worst 1. Gabby La La. Expected alot more out of a set with Claypool In support. She sucked the life out of the Beltless Buckler during the Duo's set as well 2. Dave Matthews Band. Sorry, but Dave is just not what I want to see At Bonnaroo 3. Jack Johnson. Nothing against Jack. Rain kinda put a damper on this set. Kids climbing the trees were the highlight of an otherwise lackluster set.
The Best: 1) Ray LaMontagne - A revelation. The feeling of mutual respect, admiration and love between Ray and the crowd was almost tangible. The guy just oozes genuine sincerity, and it feels so good to listen to him sing.
2) The Perceptionists - A real Hip Hop party in a Bonnaroo late night tent. Like Ray, the Perceptionists seemed genuinely humbled by the reception they received from the crowd.
3) Trey - The internet consensus (and not just on these boards) seems to be that this was a dissappointing show, but I had a different experience. I missed the begining (maybe it got off to a bad start?), but I heard new originals that I really enjoyed (Come as Melody), thought the Matisyahu spot was amazing and thought Bo Bice was fun. He played the majority of Abbey Road! Trey jamming on The End on a Bonnaroo late night stage? I was giddy. The Perceptionists --> Trey is one of my best nights at Bonnaroo.
The Worst? Well, personally I wouldn't put it that way. I chilled out under a shade tent on Sunday afternoon for Modest Mouse and MMJ. I was underwhelmed by both sets but I attribute it completely to my mood/total exhaustion, and wouldn't be surprised if I would have been thrilled by MMJ ast least if I was in the front row.
I do love Herbie's enthusiasm after all of these years, but I just didn't feel it. I had the same legend loving his job feeling that you did (futurecowboy) with Herbie Hanc0ck when I was seeing Toots and the Maytals, and Clutch hated that show. So to say that someone was the best or worst is kinda hard. It's all just a matter of opinion. I hated Herbie when most people loved him. I loved Toots when some hated him. That's what makes it a great festival. If you don't like what you are seeing, get up and go see someone else.

Sparklybecca nailed it. If we were not feeling it we just wandered off to something else. There is soooooo much going on you will always find your right groove. We walked away from Trey pretty quickly and had a blast in the sonic forest instead.
We weren't loving Galactic and found a scorching Mars Volta set going on. WOW!
Post by futurecowboy on Apr 3, 2006 13:15:26 GMT -5
That's definitely how it is, paranoid. I totally wandered into KDTU w/o trying to after Trey, and was BLOWN AWAY. Had the perfect spot - outside of the tent (left side). Music was perfectly crisp, got to see the whole light show, while seeing flashes from the Sonic Forest in my left peripheral vision (and hear it just faintly). It was improving w/ the band, almost. AWESOME experience.
Best: -Yonder Mountain String Band -The Duo w/ Mike Gordon -The Word
Worst: -My Morning Jacket - they sound ok but it just seems like they play the same setlist every year at 'roo. Especially the first two years they were there. -Modest Mouse - i like some of there stuff but they just sound horrible live.
BEST John Prine-Played all of his classics, even took one of my requests. Lightning and rain, people getin down and having a blast. DMB-Like someone said earlier, not the greatest fan, but they sure did put on an amzing show. Robert Randolph sealed the deal. Kings of Leon-my second time to see them live. They played every song from their catalog. I was in the very front and towards the end he started saying how pleased he was so many people showed up. Turned and looked behind me to see a TON of people. Mars Volta-I hadn't heard any song from them prior to this show. My friends told me that i should check them out. Man was i glad i did. Tons of energy both on stage and in the crowd.
WORST Black Crowes-There was a lot of people at the begining and slowly people started leaving cause it started getting pretty boring. Gabby Lala-It was obvious everyone wanted to see Les, and it was even more obvious that he wanted all the attention to be on Gabby. She seemed tired and that made me feel tired. Trey-It was just wierd, but i did enjoy the glowstick volcano.
Best 1)THE MARS VOLTA-no words can describe... 2)STS9- Caught a little of their show before going to TMV but, the little I did see was awsome.(one of my favorite bands) 3)UM-Standard setlist but, still one of my favorites.
Worst 1)Trey-Boring 2)The Word- I just could'nt get in to it. Maybe I was just too tired but, i just thought it was to slow and kind of sounded the same the whole time. 3)Widespread Panic-Never have been the same since Micheal Houser died.
I think that if you left the dmb show early you may think that it sucked. The show started out a little slow, but man did it pick up about half way in. They killed towards the end, but I can see as to how those who left early may have hated it.
i realize this is a matter of opinion...but the frp u really think one of the WORST shows at bonnaroo last year was dave??
I've never liked Dave, but I decided to give him a chance. Other than Watchtower, I felt like I had wasted an hour and a half or so (missed the beginning of the set) and didn't leave like I do during the day if a show isn't great since I had no music alternative at the time. So yes, for me it was one of the few bad shows I saw.

allright that works =) just wanted more of an explanation

Yea, I was thinking about it, and I dunno if me listing the Toots in the "worst" category (which isn't really fair, no one at bonnaroo is bad, just not as good as others) was a fair assesment. I don't think I was in the best state (that is, I wasn't in a altered one). It was early sunday, and I was tired, and I was like totally sober. I certainly wouldn't say I "hated" it, it was still fun and I'd do it again; and it probably would have been cooler had there been a big crowd. I'd edit my number 3 to say "the weather", but it would mess-up the continuity of the thread.
As for whomever was disappointed in Jack's set from last year . . . seriously?!? The weather put a damper on things, but its like I tell people "You don't really know Jack Johnson 'til you hear him play Banana Pancakes in the pouring rain" I didn't stop smiling for days after he played that song. The sheer irony of it all "can't you see that it's just raining? there ain't no need to go outside" and we are all standing outside, in the rain, for the need of seeing Jack play that song. Only two things disappointed me about that set, the fact that is overlapped Keller; and the fact that there was no steel drum when he played Flake. Other than that, damn good stuff.

Best: 1. The Secret Machines 2. Bela Fleck Acoustic Trio (Front Row! ;D) 3. Widespread Panic, Night Two
Worst: 1. Toots & The Maytals - I thought the performance was very blah. Plus, I was hoping for special guests to play with him, but none came 2. Lake Trout - I just wasn't feeling this show. 3. I hate to say this - Alison Krauss & Union Station. The music itself, was great. But coming on a half hour late and ending 20 minutes early isn't cool.
