I love the additions..now I know when I can bbq at the tent.
Seriously, you can get all "king of the castle, king of the castle (borat reference)" about jazz or coleman or any of the other additions, but no one outside of a handful of music geeks is gonna get excited about these additions.
I'm not gonna bash them, they may be genius', but "average music/festival fan" is not gonna buy a ticket because of any of these additions.
I saw the N.O. Klezmer Allstars open for Oysterhead on 11/17/01 in Asheville. The best way I can describe them is Polka-music on Acid. Really just strange music. They jam out, but for the style of music, it doesn't seem like the type of music that should be jammed out. They are different and interesting, but I doubt I will check them out again.
As to the overall list where are The Shins? Modest Mouse? The Aracade Fire? Disco Biscuits? Daft Punk?
Also, Yard Dogs were f*cking WEIRD at Vegoose. Definitely some interesting sh*t going. Definitely a throw back to the turn of the century. I watched a good portion of their set before Jim James took the stage. I also was drawn into the tent several times over the weekend.
They will most likely have their own tent where they will have scheduled shows. Maybe in the comedy tent between acts.

Lame. Why should I care who sells tickets? I care about them putting on the most excellent, comprehensive festival, and Coleman (among many others) goes very far in this pursuit. But, while saying all that, I don't mean to imply that I even agree with you. Coleman's music is not for a handful of music geeks, but for millions upon millions and generations upon generations of jazz fans. You seriously underestimate his cultural importance, and the size and quality of his fanbase. For shame.
Holy moly! Ornette Coleman! That's one guy I thought I'd never end up seeing. He ranks right up there with Al DiMeola, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, and Black Sabbath as the #1 acts I'd ever want to see. Now if they'd have just added Cohen instead of Bromberg, I would have seen them all.

I guess I'm not surprised at all the hating going on about this addition, but complaining that the additions are "lame" or dissapointing b/c you don't know any of the artists on it speaks more for those individuals' painful ignorance than the weakness of the addition. Everybody wants to see their favorite band at roo, but that can't always be the case. I've been to Roo every year, and the first year I "knew" exactly 3 bands on the bill. Since then I've been steadly expanding my horizions and each year has gotten better in my opinion. This year I will get to see my favorite band (Ween), a legendary Jazz musician, an in-demand mega-reunion and an international superstar (Manu Chao), and that's just 4 out of 100+ acts. This will no doubt be the best Bonnaroo EVER, and anyone who thinks otherwise b/c TMV or Arcade Fire aren't there can jump up my butt.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
"We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, movie gods, and rock stars. But we wont, and we're slowly learning that fact & we're very, very pissed off......."
I think mainly people have a list of bands in their heads they want to see added, and when they don't get one, they feel let down.
It's natural. I don't think it means someone is ignorant or anything like that. Mainly, people just want to have things go the way they want them to, and when that doesn't happen, there is a natural feeling of disappointment.
Not everyone likes Jazz. I do, but not everyone does. So just b/c someone doesn't get excited about a particular artist doesn't make them less of a music lover or bonnaroovian.
I'm happy, I dunno how many times I've said that, today, on THIS FORUM ALONE, trying to defend the additions.
Leonard Cohen would've been beyond incredible, zooguy. My favourite singer songwriter, besides Nick Cave... ooh... that's a thought.
edit: also that's something that all of us should know by now: Bonnaroo's artist lineup is very eclectic. It's the place to go to see ALL kinds of music: country, rap, techno, prog, bluegrass, jazz, experimental, metal, pop, folk, the genres represented at the fest are all encompassing. So expect the unexpected. Once we think they're gonna shower us with a few indie bands or some more rap, they'll give us Merle Haggard... It's a beautiful thing.

I'm cool with not being excited about these additions, or not caring at all for that matter. But when people here start calling it 'pitiful' or saying this round 'sucks its kinda different/unneccesary.
Post by unplugdacusticaz on Mar 28, 2007 18:05:08 GMT -5
Well said and all, but seriously, there's some whiners on here. I would've been happy without any artist additions because there's already 20 + bands on that list I wanna see. And I probably won't get to even do that.
Post by suspendedzen on Mar 28, 2007 18:19:11 GMT -5
That's what I dont get. I, and many others here, look at additions as more icing on a cake we're already willing/happy to pay a couple hundred dollars and travel for.
I'm really happy with today's adds as I've already mentioned, I can see how some might be kinda 'ehh, whatever, if that's your thing, cool' but to call it 'pitiful' etc for not being Arcade Fire, Mars Volta, Other Really Popular Bands Of The Moment...that's just beyond my comprehension.

C'mon Featherbottom, did you purposefully set up that AD reference?!
Beat me to it. Damn.
Arguing over whether or not the addition is "good" is going to get absolutely nowhere. The conclusion simply has to be reached that some people are excited as hell the Ornette and Bromberg got added and some people aren't. Taking shots at people for being elitist for liking jazz or dumb for not just makes things worse.
i find it hilarious that there is a thread titled "the direction bonnaroo is heading" where the big debate is whether its becoming too mainstream, and now people are b!tching about the additions because they're not big enough names.
myself, i love 'em, the more the merrier. i'm not driving 2500 miles to see a bunch of bands i could see in vancouver. i am truly hoping to leave bonnaroo with a whole new wealth of musical experience, one i couldn't get anywhere else. i for one will be sure to see as many acts as humanly possible, whether or not they're known to me beforehand.

Good point (and Karma for it). It reminds me of a music appreciation class I had in college, where we talked in circle for an hour about what "authentic" music was only to find that no one (including the prof.) could define "authentic music." You can toss about labels like "too mainstream" or "too obscure" all damn day, but you won't say a thing about the actual music. I challange anyone to articulatly define what is "good" or "bad" about music by how much name recognition an artist has or how much money they make. And isn't accusing folks of being snobs for liking jazz more elitist than listning to jazz?

^amen! that is one thing I look forward to every year, learning about new music! Seeing things I never thought I would see - it's part of what makes roo so amazing and so unlike anywhere else
well put me in camp dissapointed. im not really familiar with any of those acts, and thats probably why i am dissapointed. they could all be killer acts i love and just dont know them yet. but of course a list of acts i know nothing about for the 1st announcement at roo will dissapoint. especially when the inital wasn tthat strong for my musical taste. and as far as the first addition for roo goes this seems to be the wweakest in history. oysterhead it is not!! oh well back to waiting. i didnt really expect much out of superfly and i wasnt let down. i am excited to check these adds out. especially coleman. seems like alot of people like that one. just dosent seem like a 1st round roo addition to me. im just one of these people whos happy to see the usual suspects on the list. nothing better then seeing a band you love on the list for roo and knowing they are going to be putting on one of their best shows ever. although seeing new music comes close. but there are few artists that are new to me. mostly just ones im familiar with but dont care for a whole lot. but atleast these ones are new to me. hopefully a couple in the bunch that i can get excited about. i think i liked bonnaroo better then diversaroo. but to each their own. where the hell is grace potter?!?!
im way more excited for a schedule then additions, as sad as that is. its gonna be a long road to june.

karma for making sense
These could be the greatest artists ever, but not my musical taste and they are not on the same playing field as oysterhead (sorry Mr. Coleman)...if that statement makes me misguided, than i'm happy being lost.
Also, I think at this point superfly is trying to be diversified for the sake of diversification. We get it, you are trying to get bands that touch on every genre... how bout you save all the money you spent on rock god coleman and all the other additions and bring it another major act since (volta, shins, fire..etc) that way the majority of people can enjoy another act versus a handful of in-the-know music fans...

You're right. A super group that released one album to mediocre acclaim isn't on the same playing field as the guy who helped invent free form jazz. Good observation.

You know what, I think Superfly should hire two guys who book the bands at Bonnaroo, and then send them down to Best Buy. They should bring a blindfold and a baseball bat though, so that one of the guys can wear the blindfold while spinning around the bat. And then when he's spun around ten times, he can run in the direction of the new release section, stick his arm out and whatever he knocks off the shelf, the other guy puts in a shopping cart. Then they should book whoever's in the shopping cart (unless they play that "diversified" crap).
