You know what, I think Superfly should hire two guys who book the bands at Bonnaroo, and then send them down to Best Buy. They should bring a blindfold and a baseball bat though, so that one of the guys can wear the blindfold while spinning around the bat. And then when he's spun around ten times, he can run in the direction of the new release section, stick his arm out and whatever he knocks off the shelf, the other guy puts in a shopping cart. Then they should book whoever's in the shopping cart (unless they play that "diversified" crap).

as amusing as it would be to watch 2 guys with baseball bats in bestbuy, I think an easier solution would be to bring in as many greta bands as possible. That doesn't mean there is not room for smaller acts, of course you need them and I want everybody to see some unique music is thats your cup of tea.
I'm just a little dissappointed that since the initial release we haven't really had any major additions.
Lets all make peace and hope we get some more major acts

But how many more major acts do we really want. Honestly? Looking at the lineup as it stands, there's really only room for one or two more major acts of the ilk you're talking about.
This isn't Lollapalooza where most every act gets 45 minutes and the headliners get 90-120 minutes tops. There you can stuff in as many acts as you want in a 3 day span. But at Bonnaroo, you have most sets starting at 60 minutes moving to 90 minutes and some late night sets stretching 180+ minutes. It doesn't leave a hell of a lot of room for every major act you love to play.
As a side note, I think we need to stop comparing every addition to Oysterhead as Oysterhead being an addition was pretty much a technicality. They were added BEFORE tix even went on sale, and it was pretty widely rumored to be happening anyway. If memory serves me correctly, the biggest additional acts added last year after tix went on sale were Cypress Hill and Sonic Youth.
Personally, I like to think of this additional round like I did the Bruce Hampton and the Codetalkers round last year. It was a nice add for those in the know, and everyone else was disappointed that there wasn't one more big name.
I honestly believe they could announce that Jesus Christ, Buddha, Mohammed and Charles Manson were putting aside their differences and forming a supergroup, and people would still bitch that there weren't enough big names at the thing.
You kidding me? I remember them getting a pretty big promotional push when their record hit stores. It was in the top 50 when it was released. It definitely got a bigger promotional push than any Phish record I remember.

lol...when I first read that, I thought Jesus Christ, Buddha, Mohammed and Charles Manson was a band.

I don't take issue w/ you being dissapointed. It is your perogative and I am sorry you couldn't enjoy the announcement as much as others.
But saying Coleman isn't a "major act," but Oysterhead would be, is insulting. Even if jazz isn't you're thing, you can't deny what the man did for music. Most jazz influences in Rock musc (esp. in "jam-bands") is influenced by Ornette Coleman, weather the musicians playing it know it or not. As just one of many examples, Coleman was a favorite on the bus "Furthur" with Ken Kesey and the Pranksters & the Grateful Dead.
Plus the guy plays out very rarely, and mostly in europe. This IS a big addition, weather you likeit or not.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I dunno, if you ask anyone who likes jazz, Ornette is as big (prolly bigger) an announcement than Mars Volta or Arcade Fire. I mean, christ the guy's a legend. I'm f*ckin satisfied, I'll tell you that much. And if the additions are anything like this weeks batch, I think we'll be witnessing one of the best and most well-rounded fests of the year.
Agreed. I'm sorry that this didn't fit some people's idea of a "big" addition because TMV and Arcade Fire were left out; but please people, dig yourselves out of the indie hole you're in. These additons might not strike your typical 20-something as "big", but they are. Just because you don't know them doesn't mean they're not big. In the grand scheme of music, both Ornette and Bromberg will go down as bigger than TMV and Arcade Fire will ever be.
Hmm, I have no idea who any of those artists are...
Is that bad? No
Am I too indie? I'm hardly indie.
It's okay to be disappointed. I'm sure I'll dig into these names and check it out. I think I would like to see some jazz, so this is a good welcome. However, to me, these are just more groups are *easily* overlooked if a band that I am only familar with by name is playing on another stage.
id give a nut for bruce hampton to be in an announcement. ill take codetalkers or aru. either way is fine. and i havent bought a cd in 10 years so i guess im out of the loop on that whole thing. no matter whast announced some will be excited, some will be indifferetn and some will be dissapointed. why does it always turn into an us versus them/im right your wrong/you dont know music and i do type situation? to each their own
The Col. isnt with the codetalkers right now. He has a new thing the Quark Alliance. I'm seeing them Friday.
ya i remember reading something about that now that you mention it.. i will have to check it out. that will work too. anything with hampton will work. that codetalkers show was great last year. and the crowd was small. one of my favorites from last year. be sure to let us know how the show was. but with herring playing with wsp id love to see aru in addition to quark alliance at roo!!!

Well, admittedly, i'm one of the hardcore Volta fans and I was/am disappointed that they haven't been added yet. Ornette Coleman more than makes up for this! It was one of those absolute surprise additions that SuperFly does so well! I said it earlier but, if Coleman had been the only addition today......I would have still been thrilled! I don't know much about anyone else on the list but, I'm going to wait until I do before I try to form an opinion. I'm really interested in checking-out El P but, even if it's not my thing, i'm not going to waste any time or effort trashing it. There's just too much positive stuff to focus on. I'm all about hoping, praying and even shamlessly begging for certain bands to be added but, I know that it might not happen. Either way, i'm pretty happy. There's no way that Superfly/AC can add every band that every person wants to see but, they do a pretty damn good job trying! People should just be (overwhelmingly) happy that they're getting to go to Bonnaro, pure and simple!
That being said.......I would still REALLY like a TMV addition!

How odd, I've been listening to nothing but Klezmer stuff all week, and now a New Orleans Klezmer Band? cool And Ornette Coleman IS huge. I'm very excited about that. The others are 'meh'.
I guess I fail to understand the whole purpose of Bonnaroo. Should we only enjoy bands we're already familiar with? That's just sad. I mean, I don't resent that opinion, I just find it SAD.
Some country music will make you cry. Some funk will make you dance. Some jazz will open your mind. Pop music is fun. Bach is beautiful.
Come to the festival and enjoy what you hear.
As for the "Ornette won't attract festival goers" ( I think I saw that on page 5 here)...
Why should I care?
I'm going with friends. We'll have fun. I've been 2 times before and liked the people I met. If nobody else comes.

Fine.
More dancin' room for me.
Not to preach...but..JEEZ!
Stop making sense...we're trying to be petty here.

why should either of you care if something that excites you dissapoints someone else? and on that token why should i care if you care? i dont know. its just a vicious cycle that seems like it will never end. i could see if someone comes into the coleman thread and talks smack. but this is the artist addition thread. there will always be excited people and dissapointed people. it dosent have to turn into a personal battle everytime.
PASTE MAGAZINE SAYS: "el-p's latest transmission from the frontline is an aunt jemima-thick, front-to-back instant classic, welding the sort of noise the Bomb Squad once specialized in to the precision-crafted rhyme schemes that made his former outfit, Company Flow, so special. Already the best hip-hop release of 2007, and it ain't even close." 4/5 stars URB MAGAZINE SAYS: "El-P's production often lives and grows unpredictably on it's own. There's a biological weapon mutation taking place all over this record, and yet, it's the moments of humanity that'll freeze out the haters." 4/5 stars BIG CHEESE MAGAZINE: "All punching beats, bass tremors and synth hits..." 4.5 out of 5 SPIN MAGAZINE SAYS: "I'll Sleep When You're Dead's blood type is B-boy-positive, but it's imbued with EL's ever-changing moods and styles. Equal parts faithful-but-twisted boom bap ("EMG") and avant-indie rock (the epic, Mars Volta-guested "Tasmanian Pain Coaster"), the album drips with elbow grease."
Eh. I can't say I feel bad for verbally abusing jackasses for acting superior in not knowing who an artist is. That is to say, I haven't really seen a lot of people dissing guys who don't know who El-P or Ornette Coleman is, but there are several people that have inferred people excited about these additions are music geek idiots who are only kidding themselves. People can be disappointed or excited about the addition for all I care.
I was sort of neutral at first because, outside of El-P, none of these acts were even on my radar as possibilities. It's not like I listen to Keith Jarrett albums and think he'd show up at Bonnaroo. But that's sort of what having Ornette Coleman coming to Bonnaroo's like. It's not something I'd necessarily think of, but I'm glad the AC/Superfly guys did. And it's the kind of addition that lures other musicians to the festival to begin with. Plus, I honestly would not be surprised if there was yet another addition later in the week. I really do think they'll be coming hard and fast now...

im still puzzled by no grace potter. maybe the article that said she was playing roo was incorrect. maybe its in the next batch of additions. i sure hope so.
and ya ill admit i have never heard of ornette coleman till now, but i love clasic jazz, especially badass sax players, dunno why i never heard of him but he probably makes this addition for me too.

Yeah, I'm sort of surprised they said nothing about this either.
On the bright side, at least the Fiction Plane rumor hasn't been officially confirmed...

I've considered this as well, I believe the article said "recently selected to play the Bonnaroo music and arts festival", which could have been referring to last year.
