So this is Ares. And we are gong to pick up his sister Freja. What was SUPPOSED to be his brother Morpheus is getting neutered. But SHE (surprise) is getting spayed. Picking her up at 2 PM. Got to find another name.
A stray kitten showed up on my doorstep yesterday when I was coming back from the store. It seemed terrified, trying to run away from the neighborhood kids who were tormenting it, as well as famished from the extreme heat. As much as I empathized I didn't want to let it in for fear of how it'd mix with my cat Astroid. But as soon as I opened my door it darted inside. It was skin and bones. I've been slowly giving it food and water. It is very loving and affectionate towards me, but as expected Astroid is not taking kindly to it. They keep hissing at each other.
For anyone who has ever taken in a stray, is this fairly common? If so, how long does the hissing back and forth last usually? I'm not 100% sure if I'll keep it. My better judgment says not to, but it's so damn cute and I feel sorry for it. I plan on taking it to the vet sometime early this week to get checked out.

I brought in a stray that was found in my mom’s fender in 2017 (Name: Keno). She still has the cat, but her older cat (name: Kiki) more or less ignores it now. Keno was a kitten when they found him, but Kiki is like 20 years old now. They hissed at each other a lot at first, but Keno eventually respected Kiki as the matriarch in the house I think. They still don’t relax or cuddle with each other, but they can be on the same couch together now (albeit opposite ends). I’d say it took about a month, but I’m pretty sure Keno was feral. He still isn’t super affectionate towards anyone in the house, but he always comes back 🤷🏽♀️😂

scent swapping has always worked for me to introduce new kitties. close the door and keep Astroid in a single room for a day, let the stray walk around the house and smell Astroid and introduce the stray's scent around the house as well. then swap them so that Astroid can walk around the house and smell the stray. then just give them some space during feeding time and see how it goes. repeat as neccessary.

My girl Alice did it the opposite way. She let Yolandi keep her rule of the roost and allowed magpie the guest bedroom but it was for a couple weeks. Doing small intervals of both cats together free in the house. It's been about four months now and yoyo is still hesitate but they're "friendly."

oh man i am so sorry for the bummer post. we had to let our sweet little stinker baby Neko go today. she was 17 years old, and she was a part of our family for 14 years. i loved this dog so much. so grateful we had so much time with her. her quality of life had been poor for a while, it was the right thing to do but it still hurts so much.
spoiler tagging massive photo dump. that second picture of her and me is how she spent most of her time, stuck to me like velcro.
