Okay well here's a new guess, Weezer used to play shows as Goat Punishment, they did Island In The Sun and have generally sunny pop songs. Wheezing is a persistent sound and a persistent condition, sometimes.

...gary said they clue refers to a band that never played bonnaroo...
OMG you guys I might have something. I am irrationally excited right now.
With all the recent kerfuffle over zodiac signs, maybe the former goats are referring to Capricorns who would now be Sagittarius under the "new" zodiac. That would fit pretty perfectly with the sun shining bit, as zodiac signs are referring to where the sun was when a person was born.
So maybe we should be thinking about centaurs and/or archers? Or something using the word Sagittarius itself.
Thinking that possible the "sun shining" refers to their location...ie. the sunshine state which refers to both Florida and Queensland, AU. Tweeted gary, hopefully he'll respond.
What about Archers Of Loaf? They recently played an unannounced reunion show, had an EP titled Vs. The Greatest Of All Time often shortened to Vs. G.O.A.T.
This isn't very helpful but The Jesus Lizard (who were from Austin, Texas, a very sunny area) had an album called Goat... never played roo before, recently reunited. Not sure if they are still doing shows but they did a pretty lengthy tour that extended until 2010, I think.

The song Greatest of All Time was also on their album Vee Vee so there is the repitition and the first song on that album is called Step Into the Light, could be another link to sun shining
Hmph, I guess that means my guess of The Extra Lens is ruled out too. Oh well, it was a pretty shoddy guess anyway.
Why would you say that? I left it on there but can remove it if you twist my arm! ;D
Haha well I guess it isn't 100% ruled out, I was just thinking that since Gary is giving us hints for the clue it probably means we haven't hit on the answer yet. Plus I'm not sure he would specifically rule out Mountain Goats if the answer was a side project.

I'm really optimistic about the zodiac idea, it seems like such a good fit and I'm hoping I might be on to something with it.
Even if that is the right track, I kinda doubt the clue is actually referring to artists' birthdays and/or zodiac signs. Since it's former goatS, plural, it would have to be at least two people, and I kinda doubt there's any band out there with multiple people with birthdays at the right time to be Capricorns who would be Sagittariuses under the "new" zodiac. Maybe if there were twins involved, but the only twin acts I could think of were the Watson Twins and Tegan and Sara and neither set of twins has birthdays at the right time.
So if I'm right with my zodiac thinking, it would have to be a band with some other connection to Sagittarius...archers or centaurs in their name or something like that.
I'm not completely sure how they'd fit but maybe Beady Eye? Formerly Oasis, Gem Archer...the first single is Bring the Light. Probably not, just throwing stuff out there.

Dude I really like that idea. EP is shortened to GOAT, they have the word Archer in their name which also relates to Sagittarius, and they just played their first show in 13 years I believe. They have no more dates scheduled but they didn't say they were done again!

Yeah, Archers of Loaf is sounding possible to me based on what you guys are saying. IDK anything about them, but definitely possible!
The connection for "A persistence of sound persists" isn't super solid, but it could be right, or there could be some other explanation for that part that we're missing.
"A persistence of sound persists" sounds like a very Archers Of Loaf thing to me but I can't come up a solid connection to it. It reminds me of Distance Comes In Droves from All The Nations Airports but that's not good enough. They used a lot of reverb and other "noise" in their songs...perhaps the persistence of noise refers to them playing again in this their twentieth year.

I was referring to the reverb thing being about "bass" which has not been mentioned yet actually, and reiterating that nannies are female goats because of all the Archers of Loaf talk.
Archers of Loaf also have an EP called Vitus Tinnitus, which could tie in to the persistence of sound portion of the clue (i.e. loud noises causing a persistent ringing in the ear).

thats solves the second part for me. tinnitus perfectly fits "a persistence of sound persists"

This all fits pretty well! Hopefully we can cross this one off.
