this may have been said already, but if he is in fact playing Thursday, isn't it possible that he plays the which stage? VIP could still do their thing on the main stage and that whole area doesn't need to be opened up. Kanye definitely deserves a stage.
I haven't seen anything that explicitly said Phil & Friends and MMJ were playing on separate nights, but I've seen it referenced a few times in this thread. I didn't find anything specific checking today's site/email update, Pollstar, mmj.com or phillesh.net. Is that official somewhere, or is it just assumed that these two will be playing different nights.

Well how else are they both going to play a late night slot on the Which Stage?? I really don't think they're playing at the same time on the same stage....

Since neither are known for their short sets and their both announced on the Which stage, it is to be assumed.
Who says there's no Thursday late-night? I can't dismiss that possibility at this point. Considering that the final night is usually a jam headliner, for those who stay the whole way through, and Jack Johnson has that slot this year... why not instead a big jam name on the first night for those that arrive early?

That is possible that one of them will play on Thursday... probably Phil if any of them do... I can't see MMJ playing opening night. But then again, I don't know for sure... nobody here really does

That's what I was trying to say with my first post that drew the reactions. Just because they're both late nights doesn't guarantee Fri/Sat. I can't see MMJ on opening night either. I would guess they'd be after Pearl Jam headlines.
I still can't see an artist as big as Kanye playing when there are people on the highways of Manchester waiting in line to get in. It doesn't make sense.
One idea that occurred to me to have some weight was BonnarooDetective's overlapping sets with JJ and Kanye on Sunday. Probably not out of the realm of possibility at all, but perhaps this idea works better with Metallica on Friday night. Instead of our typical headliner, they will try something new, like filling the 8-12 hour up with Kanye first on the which, then overlapping with the start of metallica later, say 9 or 10. There's even room for Chris Rock on the main stage eitherr before or during Kanye. The chance of them changing headline slots during fri-sat-sun is more feasible to me, then them having Kanye headline Thursday, when they are still dealing with at least 20,000-30,000 more people who haven't made it in yet.
They added Thursday to the lineup last year to compete with the other 4-day fests, who offer camping and music for 4 days. It's a way of saying "hey we offer music for 4 days, too." However, reality dictates that the traffic jam that starts on Wednesday and ends on Friday is such a major task, that having headliners or even big name acts on Thursday creates more problems, not less. Frankly, it's simply not fair to a person who travelled from NY to see Kanye, only to have them miss it because they were stuck in traffic and had no way to get in. This is why Thursday will forever be reserved for mid-tier acts, and are very, very rarely a must-see acts, certainly not an artist billed as high as 4th.
Im still not convinced KANYE and or Jack Johnson are headliners. I think the 3rd Headliner is still to be named. and NO Im not on the Zepplin bandwagon

If there was going to be another huge artist, it would have been announced before tickets went on sale. Especially now that tickets for a number of other fests have now gone on sale and the choice has been made for many patrons going to only one or two fests. Why would you pay to have the current #1 billboard artist and a headliner at ALMOST EVERY FESTIVAL IN AMERICA and the best-selling rap artist of last year, grammy award winner, and someone touring HUGE arenas, name them AS HEADLINERS, only to announce someone else later and bump them to mid-card status? Sorry man, it's wishful thinking on your part.

My thoughts exactly. You can say "oh the festival starts on Thursday," but the reality is that come Thursday night, there will still be people waiting to get in. If Kanye were on Thursday, it would only make the traffic situation worse, as people try to cram in before his show starts.
i only made it to page 3, but you guys are leaving out one fact, no one said phil and mmj are fri. and sat. phil could be sun. (like some of us previously guessed). thus kanye could be fri. or sat. i think this is the most likely scenario. phil ending the fest sun. night on which stage vs. kanye opening the fest thur. night, which is more likely?

This is possible, but I think it would have to lead to opening Sunday up to a full late night. Which stage does not have the capacity to accommodate a Phil and Friend's show if it is the only show going; and while it is not out of the realm of possibility that they open Sunday up to a full late night, it think it is highly unlikely. As many have mentioned, there are noise issues; the people of Manchester have to get up Monday morning. Also, adding a full late night Sunday would conflict with the thousands of people who leave the festival Sunday night to get home for work on Monday. Plus, if music on Sunday carried until 3 or 4 am, getting people out on Monday would be even more difficult than it already is. I would say its more likely that Thursday gets a full late night than Sunday.
Although, as I have stated, I don't think either is going to happen. I think Kanye and JJ will have slightly overlapping time slots.

it won't be a real late night, it won't start at midnight like usual. it will start when jj is done around 10-10:30. or maybe even earlier than that and he will overlap jj. and there won't be anyone else on the other stages.

If they were doing late night sets on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, why did they only announce 2 bands yesterday?
I think the odds of Kanye playing a tent Thurs, Friday, or Saturday is 1000 more likely than having a late-night on Sunday.
But hey, anything's possible. I just think too many people would rather re-write the set times than squeeze the available bands into the traditional slots.

Notice I said that he would play a TENT on one of those days or get a daytime set. MMJ and Lesh are playing the STAGE.
From what I can can gather, they don't use the stages on Thursday or on Sunday after 11pm so as not to piss off the locals.
I just assume there will be exactly two late-night stage performances over the weekend and they were announced yesterday.
Kanye's friend and tourmate Lupe Fiasco says he'll play Friday, so right now, I'm banking on a late night tent set with him, Kanye, and possibly Talib Kweli.

the only time i was there sun. night was 2005 and i know wsp played after midnight. so the theory of not being able to play late goes out the window. phil ending the fest could happen. and i think that is way more likely tan them putting kanye''s big ass show in a tent. also it was brought up before, kanye is 4th on the bill. he won't play in a tent. he has to be on a stage. and since his show is glow in the dark, you assume it has to be at night. which means it would have to be late night on a stage. and it's not going to be thur. because of logistics. why are people arguing with that?
Your logic makes plenty of sense. I'm just not sure if his set-up absolutely requires a stage like you're assuming.
On the other hand, 1) I haven't seen his set-up and 2) I've never been to Bonnaroo.
have you seen him on award shows or on something like live 8? it's huge. it would have to be on a stage at bonnaroo, the tent stages are not near as big.
It may have been mentioned before and I missed it but...
Consider this: 1) Rap shows usually aren't super long sets. 2) Late night has previously meant anytime after the headliner finishes. 3) Many headliners have not filled the fully 2.5-3 hour time slots allotted.
Using these facts I think it is possible for Kanye to do the following: 1) Play after a headliner on What Stage. 2) Play before one of the 2 announced Which Stage artists (MMJ & Phil Lesh)

I'm talking about his glow in the dark set-up. The closest I've come to seeing it was his Grammy performance and that was the Daft Punk set-up. I saw him at Lolla 06, but I'm assuming this is a totally different set-up.
Im still not convinced KANYE and or Jack Johnson are headliners. I think the 3rd Headliner is still to be named. and NO Im not on the Zepplin bandwagon
Meltdown. I'm with you. I think the 3rd headliner is coming.
As for when Kanye or JJ is playing, why doesn't somebody just call them? It can't be that hard to find out the phone numbers of their management, can it? That should be everyone's job at work tomorrow.
People who talk about "no Thursday late nights" don't know what theyre talking about.
Rodrigo y Gabriela started at midnight on Thursday last year and didnt finish up til almost 3. Thats absolutely a late night set. There should be no reason why Kanye couldnt or wouldnt do it on at least the Which stage.

Here's the only hitch: THEY DON'T USE THE STAGES ON THURSDAY NIGHT BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO LOUD FOR A WEEKNIGHT. Or at least, they haven't lately.

Doesn't mean they can't. The farm is pretty huge. Sound dissipates quickly over space, especially with all of the people in the area.
So what if the most logical idea this far is not just like what Bonnaroo has done in the past? If Bonnaroo did everything the exact same way every year there would be no comedy tent. There would be no cinema tent. There would be no Metallica, Mastodon, Against Me!, The Sword, etc. There would be no comedian on the main stage. There be no 4th day.
Bonnaroo evolves year by year. The most logical idea is to give Kanye a thursday, pseudo-headlining set (on Which Stage) or a late night (on Which Stage).

Notably, if you look at the advertisements for Roo this year, they are listing four headliners together: Metallica, Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, and Kanye West. They are not just listing the three as in years past.
