I decided that I should start a general Coachella thread.
I am thinking that I might make a run further west for this festival - depending on lineup. thought I would see what people thought about Coachella, how does the environment compare, things like that.
an April festival, June festival, and july festival would be nice. Better start saving my pennies...
I went in 07 and had a good time. It's definitely a different feel than Bonnaroo, though. The shows are pretty short and done by midnight. You're a little more restricted as to what you can do there. Once you go into the festival, there's no going back to your campsite to get stuff. Booze must be consumed in the campground or beer garden. The site is a bit smaller and somewhat cramped. They also try and limit noise in the campground due to the condos right beside the festival site. The year I went, they brought in about 100 cops in riot gear to shutdown the campground parties (it didn't work, theres some good videos on youtube). Your food options in the campground are pretty limited, but that's easy enough to work around.
That being said, the setting is amazing. You're surrounded by mountains and palm trees. It's pretty easy to plan for as the weather is hot and sunny every day. There's no need for any rain gear. The food inside the festival is really good and reasonably priced. There's usually some really cool interactive art installations. The way the entire place lights up at night is something to behold. Palm Springs is also a decent town to spend a couple of days in after the festival. It's really laid back and was a good place to just chill out and get some rest.
If there's a Coachella lineup in the future that I like, I'd go back for sure.
^^^agreed with everything...07 coachella was my first fest ever, and it was a blast...being restricted to drink beer in the gardens was a definate bummer...also, the fact that the music was done by about one-ish is another reason i would take roo over coachella any day...that being said, a stellar line-up could possibly draw me back
oh yeah, tickets are more pricey, camping is an extra charge (unless you get a hotel which will cost more), plus, it's only three days of music
I've never been, but I'd love to go this year with it being over my birthday and all. But considering that I'm back in college now, it'd be hard to pull off. It would take an unbelievable line-up to get me there at this point, unfortunately.

considering my proximity to the festival, it's kind of amazing that i've never been... but the lack of 24 hour festivities is a big turn off to me. i don't buy a festival ticket to sleep ;D
(at least vegoose was in las vegas! plenty else to do all night!)
but a killer line up would make me reconsider, for sure.
Hmm...never been to Coach before and been thinking seriously....right now I can get a condo that sleeps six IN Indio for JUST over $100 per person...which is a WAAAY better deal than camping @ Coach from everything I've heard...but I'm afraid the deal won't last till the lineup comes out....I do HATE these things....decisions, decisions!

Bamabelle, if you decide to take a blind gamble, I would be interested in sharing the space/cost. which nights are included? is that a cost for x number of nights? Always one of those risky things committing to something before all the details are known.
In reading about the camping space, etc....it is not all that interesting. I would prefer to have at least my vehicle.
I bet that there would be at least a few acts coming that I would want to see. I think schedule will be out in late January, but at that point, rates would likely go up.
^^^I'll let ya know Todd....it's like $660 for the week...the 17th-24 of April so it's a GREAT deal...2 bedroom condo in Indio with a queen sleeper....literally MINUTES away from the site best I can tell...it's right off exit 111 which is the exit for Coach....21 miles from the Palm Springs airport...I agree that there will be at least SOMEONE on the bill worth seeing...if anyone else is REALLY SERIOUSLY interested PM me and we'll see what we can put together.

well, i've been once, and if i ever end up going back to coachella, i think the one thing i wouldn't have to worry about is the artist line-up. it's great just about every year, as far as my taste in music goes. if i lived on the west coast, i'd def go every year.
but...coachella's so far from where i live. money's tighter these days, and travel costs are prohibitive.
plus, every year bonnaroo has gotten more and morediverse with their line-up, with increasing overlap of coachella artists. and as other have said, 'roo has its advantages over coachella, such as late-night sets by electronic artists and a better overall camping atmosphere.
unless my financial situation turns around big time, it'll have to be bonnaroo over coachella for the time being. i'm sure i'll wince when i see coachella's line-up this year, knowing i can't go.
I hope to go to Coachella someday. IMO, their line-up this year was a fair bit stronger than Roo's lineup (albeit a less diverse one). Unfortunately, it's just not feasible for me at this point, since it's so far away from Boston, and in mid-April I'm still very much inundated with papers and studying for finals.
I'll probably get smited for this, but I'm really not all that keen on jam bands, and someday I'd like to go to a fest with less of an emphasis on jam. I like a lot of bands with jam elements, such as the Allman Brothers Band, Umphrey's McGee, My Morning Jacket, Oysterhead, String Cheese Incident and others, but I guess I just don't "get" the appeal of bands like Phish and The Dead. (I did enjoy the Widespread Panic show, though)
Even so, 2008 Jack would still buy a ticket to the first Roo; 2002 Jack, however, would not. This is why I don't like it when hardcore Roo vets complain about how the new fans are ruining the vibe of Bonnaroo, since I'm one of those new fans, and it makes me feel ostracized.
For those of you who have been to Coach before...what is the crowd vibe like? 'cause I was REALLY disappointed in the Lolly crowd vibe...but I LOVE the vibe at VooDoo. So you Coach vets...what's the vibe like? Really rude and social....or more laid back and into the music? That will make a BIG difference in whether I am willing to shell out the $$$ even with a killer line up....

Coachella is kinda dominated by the hipster crowd. It makes for some good people watching. Bad tattoos and stupid clothing choices (a hoody in the desert?) aplenty

that's one thing that kinda sucks about Coachella. The timing really isn't good for students

yeah my ex was from san francisco and her bday was the friday of coachella and she couldnt go because of school. lame.
I went in 07 simply to see Rage Against the Machine. The setting is so beautiful. Probably the best of any festie I've been to. The people weren't as cool or easy to befriend as they are at other festies. Really the only thing that Coachella has on Bonnaroo in my opinion is the Sahara Tent. You can pretty much rave thoughout the day. They book some great electronic acts. If Roo would dedicate a tent to nothing but electronic music then Coachella wouldn't really have anything on it. It's definantly worth making it to at least once though. I'm glad I went. I probably won't make it back though unless they have an absolutely incredible lineup.

I also went in 2007 and the setting is amazing. It is really hard to compare the 2, but they can be.
Coachella's lineups are always amazing. I would have killed for Portishead and Prince last year. The lineups tend to blow away the electronic acts that Bonnaroo gets, but Bonnaroo has late night sets which is one of my favorite things about Bonnaroo. Also most of the sets are relatively shorter than Bonnaroo's sets, hardly anybody gets two hours. Ususally 90 minutes for the big acts if that.
As stated above the Sahara tent is out of this world awesome, THey always have great sets in there, and it has full 360 sound around the tent, not to mention the crazy lightshows that go along in there.
I do find that Coachella has you running around most of the time catching bands. THere is always so much good music happening in a limited amount of time, if you stop to rest, you will probably be missing something, and late at night theres a good set closing every tent, it can be hard to decide.
As far as the camping goes, I did have a blast hanging with our crew and neighbors. They do a search of your gear that can be extensive or mild depending on the luck of the draw, and your not supposed to bring in alchohol, but it was really easy. THere arent as many party favors going around, but they are there, and the corn is top notch in cali. THe facilities are super clean, although the bathrooms got kinda bad at the end of the weekend. THe showers at the campgrounds were free and way better than Bonnaroo's and it did require some waiting but was completely worth it everyday.
The festival setting is amazing, the crowds do get pretty crazy. For example: being crammed like a sardine for Bjork, with dozens of people getting crowd surfed out from heat exhaustion. That was the craziest crowd i have ever seen and I was completely exhausted afterwards, which made me get nowhere near the front for rage. THe level of hypeness for a good show is crazy though, and it is a good vibe for the most part.
There is no ins and outs at the festival, nor can you go back to your campground from the festival, this is where Bonnaroo kicks more ass. You can leave in and out of your campsite to go anywherei n Indio, but it can be a major bitch at the end of the night to leave back to a hotel.
Coachella is definitely more plane travel friendly which is a good thing, lots of international travellers and cool people throughout the campsite. You dont need as many supplies, but it gets ridiculously hot during the day. It was 107 the day rage played, you will be exhausted at the end of the weekend.
Overall, I really want to go back, its just a matter of funding. The road trip I took there was 8 days total and i went to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas and it was my best road trip ever. Someday I will be on the polo fields again, just not this year.
